Course Descriptions
ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY I
Basic Medical
Sciences include courses that contain basic sciences information in
both Eastern and Western medical traditions. These courses
provide students with the tools necessary to understand the
structure and function of the human body from its most basic level
of organization to its most complex. While the primary
emphasis of these courses is basic Eastern and Western health
science, there is a concerted effort to place the information in
the appropriate clinical context.
ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY
II Anatomy & Physiology II continues the study
of basic structure and functions of the human body. This
course provides an in-depth study of blood and the cardiovascular
system, the lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, endocrine, urinary,
and reproductive systems of the human body. The student
learns to identify and locate these systems and to describe their
functions. At the conclusion of this course, the student
should understand the normal anatomical and physiological
relationships among all of the major systems in the human body.
MYOLOGY / KINESIOLOGY Myology is a detailed study of the muscular
system of the body, including nomenclature, histology, anatomy, and
physiological aspects of the system. The student will learn
the origin and insertion of each muscle, and to physically locate,
palpate, and demonstrate the action of the major muscle
groups. A keen awareness of the sketeal structure is needed
for the student to participate in the practice of palpation and
muscle testing.
PATHOLOGY
Pathology is the study of human disease
conditions. The scope of practtice, goals of treatment, and
various treatment modalities will be discussed for certain
neuromusculoskeletal and organic diseases, with emphasis on
indications and contraindictions for treatment of these
symptoms. Basic concepts such as cellular adaptation, the
inflammatory response, types of pain, tissue repair and healing,
hot & cold therapies, immunological diseases, and genetic
developmental diseases will be addressed. Disease conditions
related to the major systems of the body will be covered, with
holistic treatments and lifestyle issues emphasized where
applicable.
BUSINESS & ETHICS This course is designed to help students prepare
for ethical decision making in professional practice. It is
also designed to be a cornerstone in the development of student's
emerging identities as professional massage therapists. Topic
areas to be covered include regulation of the profession and codes
of ethics, issues of boundaries in relation to bodywork,
interpersonal aspects of therapeutic relationships with an emphasis
on trasference, counter transference, and the responsibility of the
therapists, emotional awareness as it relates to the bodywork, and
the psychogical factors of physical illness.

HWALGONG-ORIENTAL MEDICINE BASICS
As the philosophical, anatomical, and physiological basis of
Hwalgong Massage Technique, Oriental Anatomy & Phsiology
focuses on the nature and distribution of energy thourghout the
human body. This course includes an introduction to the
fundamental philosophical principles of Oriental medicine as well
as an in depth study of the meridian system. This course also
includes a basic study of the qualitative distribution of energy
and its area of influence. This course introduces the concept
of the organs and viscera and their functional roles in energy
development and utilization. A more detailed study of
Oriental concepts of Yin/Yang, Five Elements, and organs with
corresponding energy functions will follow.
DAHN Dahn, which has roots dating 10,000 years, began
as an ancient Korean training program to educate the population on
how to develop body and mind. Dahn is scientifically designed
to work every muscle, tendon, joint, organ and gland, while moving
fresh, oxygenated blood throughout the whole body. It teaches
practitioners to experience their Ki (chi) energy and balance the
flow within their bodies. The conscious action of focusing Ki
energy inside their body tends to stimulate their innate healing
power. This enhances the abilities to deal with environmental
stress. Specialized programs, retreats and regular classes
involve meridian stretching, meditative breath work, and dynamic
forms of energy awareness like Energy Dancing, Dahn Martial Arts,
and Brain Respiration.
(Continuing Education
Subject)BRAIN RESPIRATION
THERAPY Brain Respiration Therapy is a revolutionary
form of active meditation that allows the practitioner to link the
energy of the body with his or her consciousness, leading into a
super heightened state of awareness of self and others. A
plane of awareness reached through Brain Respiration provides an
ideal state for the massage therapist to diagnose the patient,
often enabling them to palpably feel the blockages and flow of the
energy through the person.
KI-GONG Kigong, 'Energy movement,' is practiced to
heighten the sensitivity, levels of awareness, strength and
stamina, correct physical posture and energy alignment, as well as
control of the practitioners' energy system. Kigong helps the
practiitoner to develop relaxed strengh, emotional balance and
postural alignment in a process of cognitive experience for the
student.
(Continuting Education
Subject)Western Massage Technique:
WESTERN MASSAGE TECHNIQUE I, II
In this course, a brief overview of the history of massage is
presented, as well as the fundamental principles and physiological
effects of Western massage techniques. At the completion of
this course, the student will have a general knowledge of the
Western massage principles and techniques necessary to complete the
anterior portion of the body. The student will be able to
begin assessing the various physical condition and will have the
basic palpation and massage skills necessary to give a complete one
hour Western massage treatment.
SWEDISH MASSAGE
Swedish massage has long been thought of
as the first organized and systematic method of modern therapeutic
massage in the western world. The specific strokes and
manipulations of Swedish massage are each conceived as having
definite therapeutic benefits. The goal of Swedish massage is
to speed the venous return of un-oxygenated and toxins from the
extremities. Swedish massage shortens recovery time from
muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid,
and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without
increasing heart load.
SPORTS MASSAGE
Pre and post event techniques
incorporating prevention and treatment of the most common athletic
injuries are taught in this course. Warm up and wind down, as
well as muscles and areas to be massaged for soccer players,
basketball players, cyclists, aerobic and fitness enthusiasts, body
builders, long-distance runners, golfers, swimmers, and tennis
players are among the sport massage practices taught.
Discussion of stretching, range of motion, acupressure and a
variety of techniques are presented and practiced with a breakdown
on age and particular sports, and level of fitness.
PEDIATRICS MASSAGE
Children require special treatment and
understanding, with ability to benefit greatly from massage.
Students will learn the effects of massage techniques on a variety
of childhood situations. From congestion, stress, pre- and
post-sports massage, and energy to prevention and treatment.
GERIATRICS MASSAGE
This course explores the particular benefits and techniques of
massage as it relates to the elderly, the fastest growing segment
of the USA population. Special attention is given to active
elders, wheelchair and inactive elders, and community service in
senior citizen facilities is available.
REFLEXOLOGY
The origin, theory, principles, and techniques of reflexology are
taught and practiced in this course. Reflexology is based on
the principle that there are corresponding reflex points on the
hands and feet for each organ, gland, and structure in the
body. The reflexologist can reduce tension and unblock
"congested" areas by working on those reflexes.
